Empowering Pediatric Eye Care in The Gambia: Support the IOA’s IPET Project

The International Orthoptic Association (IOA), in collaboration with the International Pediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus Council (IPOSC), proudly highlights the success and continued development of the International Pediatric Eyecare Training (IPET) program in The Gambia. This transformative initiative has been instrumental in addressing the critical shortage of orthoptic professionals in underserved regions and improving pediatric eye care.

Project Overview

The IPET project was launched to build local capacity for pediatric vision care by training healthcare professionals in orthoptics. The 9-month orthoptic training course, provides comprehensive education in diagnosing and managing conditions such as strabismus, amblyopia, and refractive errors, which are common in children.

  • Graduates Leading the Future:
The first cohort of graduates completed their training in 2022 and the second cohort are now engaged in 6-month internships, gaining critical hands-on experience. These graduates are being equipped to become future instructors, ensuring the sustainability and scalability of the program.
  • Dedicated IOA Volunteers:
Since its inception, over 15 IOA volunteers, including experienced orthoptic educators, have generously contributed their expertise. This international effort demonstrates the power of collaboration in bridging global health disparities.

Why Your Support Matters

The IPET project’s impact on pediatric eye health is tangible, yet its success depends on continued support. Your donations will directly contribute to:

Training Local Professionals – Expanding orthoptic expertise where it is needed most.
Providing Essential Equipment – Supplying tools to diagnose and manage eye conditions effectively.
Sustaining the Volunteer Program – Ensuring experts can travel to provide high-quality education and mentorship.

By empowering local healthcare professionals, this initiative not only improves eye health for children in The Gambia but creates a sustainable model for pediatric vision care.
