Become a Full Member of the IOA and Represent Your National Association on the Global Stage
Eligibility for Full Membership
To qualify for Full Membership of the International Orthoptic Association (IOA), national orthoptic associations must meet the following requirements, as outlined in the Articles of Association and the IOA Handbook:
Organizational Stability
- The national association must have been in existence for a minimum of three years.
National Representation
- Only one representative per country may hold a seat on the IOA Council to ensure effective communication and decision-making. In cases where multiple associations exist, consensus must be reached regarding unified representation.
Training and Education
- The association must operate a nationally recognized orthoptic training program or demonstrate equivalent education standards.
- Evidence of a structured training syllabus or approved professional qualification must be provided.
Promotion of the Profession
- The association must actively promote:
- The scientific and practical education of its members.
- High professional, economic, and social standards for orthoptists.

Financial and Attendance Obligations
- The association must demonstrate the ability to meet the financial obligations of membership, including annual dues.
- Attendance at IOA Council meetings is required to maintain active membership status.

Application Process
To apply for Full Membership, national associations are required to:
- Submit an Application Form: Include detailed information about the association’s structure, training programs, and constitution.
- Provide Supporting Documentation: This includes:
- Proof of existence for at least three years.
- Evidence of a nationally recognized orthoptic training program.
- Confirmation of a unified representation process (if applicable).
- Undergo Council Review: Applications will be reviewed by the IOA Council to ensure compliance with membership requirements.
