The Birth of a Global Orthoptic Organization
Uniting Orthoptists Worldwide Since 1967
The Beginning
The International Orthoptic Association (IOA) was founded to bring together orthoptists from across the globe and to promote the science and practice of orthoptics internationally. Its journey began with the vision to create a unified body to advance education, research, and clinical standards in the field.
The roots of the IOA trace back to 1967, when the British Orthoptic Society organized the first International Orthoptic Congress in London. At the conclusion of the Congress, the need for an international association to represent orthoptists worldwide was recognized, leading to the proposal for the formation of the IOA.
The Interim Committee
An Interim Committee was established to lay the groundwork for the IOA. This committee included representatives from:
- Australia
- Brazil
- Canada
- France
- The Netherlands
- Switzerland
- The United Kingdom
The committee worked to formulate the IOA’s Constitution and objectives, ensuring a strong foundation for the Association’s mission to serve orthoptists globally.
Key Milestones
- 1970: The IOA was granted charitable status by the Charity Commission of the United Kingdom, further solidifying its role as a non-profit organization dedicated to the public good.
- 1974: The IOA was officially incorporated as a company limited by guarantee under UK law. This formal legal structure provided the Association with the ability to operate effectively as a global entity.
A Growing Global Network
From its early beginnings with a few founding countries, the IOA has grown into a truly international organization. Today, it represents national orthoptic associations, individual members, and professionals across continents, fostering a global network dedicated to improving eye care through orthoptics.
Our Legacy
The formation of the IOA marked a turning point for the orthoptic profession. By establishing a global platform for collaboration, education, and research, the IOA continues to honor the vision of its founders while shaping the future of orthoptics worldwide.
“The IOA was formed to connect, support, and inspire orthoptists globally. That mission continues to drive us today.”
