Defining Standards and Guiding the Future of Orthoptics
Evidence-Based Insights to Advance Professional Practice
The Development of Position and White Papers
The International Orthoptic Association (IOA) is prioritizing the creation of White Papers and Position Papers to provide evidence-based guidance on critical topics in orthoptics. These documents will serve to:
- Define standards of care.
- Support professional advocacy and education.
- Drive informed discussions on emerging trends and challenges in the field.
Current Focus: Amblyopia
We have chosen Amblyopia as the initial focus for the IOA’s White Paper initiative. With multiple experts expressing interest in this topic, we are currently organizing the project to ensure its successful launch. Once established, this process will be used as a model for future topics such as Vision Screening and other areas of importance.
Step-by-Step Development Template
To ensure consistency and efficiency, the IOA is creating a step-by-step template for producing Position and White Papers. This framework will serve as a guide for future project managers and will include:
- Funding Models: Establishing consistent financial support and commitment to prevent delays in project initiation.
- Authorship Guidelines: Clear criteria for identifying and coordinating contributors.
- Timelines and Milestones: Structured phases to guide the paper from concept to publication.
- Administrative Support: Resources and tools to manage workflows, communication, and reviews effectively.
By formalizing this process, we aim to streamline the development of high-quality White Papers that advance the profession and ensure timely delivery.
Looking Ahead
Following the success of the Amblyopia White Paper, the IOA will expand this initiative to other pressing topics such as Vision Screening. These resources will provide orthoptists, researchers, and policymakers with valuable insights, contributing to evidence-based practices and improved patient care.
Funding and Collaboration
Recognizing the importance of financial sustainability, the IOA is actively considering funding models to support the development of Position and White Papers. Financial commitment and collaboration with national associations, partners, and sponsors will play a critical role in ensuring the success of these initiatives.
Get Involved
The IOA invites members, experts, and stakeholders to participate in developing these essential documents. Whether through authorship, project management, or funding support, your involvement is key to advancing this initiative.
